Help Test the Next Generation of KDE's Kontact

03.09.2010 12:46  The KDE PIM team has a beta version of the next-generation groupware client suite Kontact. The new Kontact is built on the Akonadi framework, sharing infrastructure for syncing with online services across applications. While the first bits of Akonadi integration already made their entry in KAddressBook as delivered with 4.4, this beta includes Akonadi versions of most of the other Kontact components, including email using the new KMail2.

There were a huge number of blogs and articles about what happened and it is safe to say that the latest conference was a success. Many attendees noted how smoothly everything ran, thanks to the KDE organizers and the local team. The local team did an awesome job, not only during the conference itself but also during the many months of thought and hard work before Akademy. The Dot managed to catch up with some key players in the local team to get their take on the KDE invasion of Tampere and find out what it is like to organize such a large event.

06.09.2010 15:15 Nachdem wir letzte Woche bereits die abschlusspräsentationen der 12-Wochen Projekte der angekündigt hatten … In 8 grossartigen Präsentationen wurden 8 großartige Lösungen vorgestellt. Natürlich wollen wir unsern Lesern, die bei den Präsentationen nicht anwesend sein konnten, auch die Lösungen nicht vorenthalten. Es folgt eine kurze Übersicht der präsentierten Ideen. Bei kann man zudem noch einmal als Video ansehen. Emotionen im Großhandel – Ausgehend von der Erkenntnis, dass viele Metrokunden diese nicht als kompetenten Partner sehen, entwickelte das Team 2 ineinandergreifende Lösungen: Eine neue Aufteilung der Metro-Märkte, in sogenannte Business Welten, also Bereiche, die sich nicht mehr an der Art der Produkte, sondern an der Art der Kunden orientieren , und einen Beispiel-Kiosk innerhalb der Metro, in dessen Gestaltung das gesamte Wissen der Metro, über Platzierung und Sortiment eingeflossen ist. In diesem Kiosk befinden sich hinter den Produkten “entdeckbare” Wissensbausteine, z.B. welche Sorten Chips sich in welcher Region besser bzw. schlechter verkaufen als andere. So können Kunden im Rahmen ihres Einkaufs neues Wissen entdecken und ihr eigenes Geschäft verbessern. Spaza – Lagerhaltung kleiner Läden in Südafrika -  “Connected Life” greifbar machen -  Das Ergebnis ist ein Gegenstand für die Telekom-Läden, der zum Anfassen einlädt: ein echter, aber gebraucht aussehender Reisekoffer, ausgestattet mit Videokassetten, CDs und Papierabzügen von Fotografien. Dieser Koffer steht stellvertretend für das Webangebot der Deutschen Telekom AG, das MedienCenter. Seine Funktionen werden von den im Koffer befindlichen Gegenständen symbolisiert: Die Kassette etwa versinnbildlicht die Online-Video-Bibliothek, die Papierbilder das integrierte Online-Fotoalbum. Die Kunden sollen das MedienCenter wie einen Koffer wahrnehmen, den sie immer dabei haben und der mit persönlichen Dingen gefüllt ist, da auch das MedienCenter ein ständiger Begleiter ist. Implantatträgern das Leben erleichtern -  Das Life Sign Monitoring Team hat in Gesprächen mit Trägern von Herzschrittmachern wesentliche Bedürfnisse der Patienten erkannt und ein Armband entwickelt, dass dem Implantatträger auf subtile Weise, durch haptische Signale mitteilt, wenn beispielsweise ein Schock bevorsteht, sodass der Träger sich rechtzeitig von gefährlichen Maschinen entfernen kann. Ausserdem gibt es ein Signal, dass dem Träger signalisiert, wenn sich ein anderer Implantatträger in der Nähe befindet und so deutlich macht, ich bin nicht alleine mit meiner Krankheit, es gibt andere, denen es genauso geht. Zu guter letzt beinhaltet das Armband eine Möglichkeit, den eigenen Herzschlag an ein Partner-Armband zu übermitteln. Junge Berliner ermuntern, Rundfunkgebühren zu zahlen -  Das Team hat erkannt, dass ein grosses Problem der Rundfunkgebühren darin besteht, dass die Zahlenden nicht wissen, wofür eigentlich gezahlt wird, und sich vom wahrgenommenen Programm nicht angesprochen fühlen. Ein Club und eine Plattform unter dem Label “Wellenreiter” soll Abhilfe schaffen, und den Gebührenzahlern zum einen Empfehlungen für interessante Inhalte geben, zum anderen zusätzliche Vorteile, z.B. beim Ticketkauf für geförderte Konzerte verschaffen und so die Wertschätzung des freien, öffentlichen Rundfunks und all seiner Angebote zu fördern. Eine Konferenz die funktioniert -  Angenehmere Sicherheitskontrollen am Flughafen -  Das Nadelöhr der Flugsicherheit ist die Personenkontrolle vorm Terminal. Hier muss jeder seinen Gürtel lösen, seinen Schmuck ablegen, Geldbeutel, Handy und Schlüssel aus den Taschen kramen. Alles vor den Augen der Mitpassagiere. Hier soll der sogenannte FAST helfen. Es handelt sich um einen kleinen Trolley, auf den zum Einen das Handgepäck abgestellt werden, zum Anderen aber auch alle persönlichen Gegenstände, die man am Körper trägt, in einem kleinen Fach untergebracht werden können. So kann jeder diese bereits vor der Kontrolle ablegen, ggf. auch in diskreterer Atmosphäre. Der Trolley wird komplett durch das Durchleuchtungsgerät gefahren. Somit wird das Nadelöhr bei der Personenkontrolle aufgelöst, und der Stress an dieser Stelle wesentlich reduziert. Elektrische Mobilität - Das e-Mobility Team präsentierte eine Roadmap für die Weiterentwicklung der smiles AG. Zudem ein Konzept, wie die smiles AG die Weiterentwicklung des Produktes durch Open Innovation, User Innovation und Open Source beschleunigen könnte. Die Projektpartner waren durchweg zufrieden. Wir sind gespannt, wann und in welcher Form die ersten Ideen ihren Weg auf den Markt bzw. in den Alltag finden. Damit ist das D-School Semester nun zuende. Es war ein intensives, spannendes und immer inspirierendes Jahr. Vielen Dank an alle “Kommilitonen”, die das Jahr zu dem gemacht haben, was es war, und nicht zuletzt an das gesamte Team der HPI D-School für die Organisation.

How Design Thinking could boost open source projects like Gnome

03.09.2010 15:30 it is now a few weeks that GUADEC’2010 in The Hague is over. We are still very glad that we could take part at this great conference and introduce Design Thinking to the Gnome community through and a . Moreover, we were very happy about the great feedback we got from the participants, like , , , , , , and . Also you might want to check our Photo Album on the web at . Yet, what is left after those three conference Workshops and how can Design Thinking actually help the Gnome project? Already during GUADEC and in the days after the conference, back at the inventedhere homebase in Berlin, we thought a lot about these and similar questions. One thing seems clear: Workshops–executed in a Design Thinking manner–are a big win for Gnome-related conferences and probably even beyond that. As the community is spread all over the globe Workshops like these are great facilitators, bringing people together, working on problems and actually coming up with very specific results. Additionally, it seemed that the cultural probes in form of real user statements came as eye-openers for many participants. Moreover we felt that those workshops simply helped establishing a relationship between the participants through a very intense shared experience. Also it was a great way to bring people with different expertise and backgrounds together. In our workshop we had great teams consisting of developers, designers, users and translators for instance. Applying this format of Workshops to Hackfests could also be very potent as the Design Thinking process helps to keep people on track and focused on what is important. Our team would be more than happy to help planning an upcoming Hackfest in such a manner and thus making it more efficient and fun. Especially when user needs come into play, Design Thinking shows its biggest strength through the identification of users’s latent needs and early testing and evaluation which are part of the iterative process and not a nuisance at the very end of it. Women's Dinner at GUADEC 2010 Two of our coaches had another interesting experience at the first women’s dinner at GUADEC . Sophia and Andrea attended the dinner. Only a few women are involved in Gnome and present at GUADEC. Thanks to those women on the picture they experienced a lot of passion and excitement from women of the Gnome community. This spirit needs to be kept up and spread to others. It would make up an interesting Design Challenge which could be phrased like that: How might we get more women involved in the GNOME community? In a Design Thinking process this question would be narrowed down based on genuine insights and then solved in a an iterative fashion. We would be glad to continue the conversation, be it through , our blog, E-Mail , twitter or . We just started our Ideation Engines – but as Design Thinkers we can’t think in the void. We are depending on your early feedback.
